Another option discussed by the group was to
plant walnuts adjacent to living ash trees, recalling
accounts that many walnut trees in Scania died
during the severe war winters of 1939–1942, with
the exception of a few individuals growing next to
ash trees.
Notably, the grafted walnut cultivars—some of
them relatively heat-demanding, such as the
French variety Franquette—had overwintered in
pots within the arboretum, protected by dense
surrounding vegetation, and showed no signs of
frost damage.

The arboretum holds a 40-year lease with SLU,
ensuring long-term continuity.
A long-term ambition, Leo explains, is to further
develop this public recreational site into a seed
source and learning environment, possibly including a “plant station” engaged in plant exchange.
